ABSTRACT
A study including 400 Arbor Acres day-old-chicks was aimed to evaluate the effect of substituting turmeric powder for dietary antibiotic growth promoter (AGP) on productive performance, carcass quality, immune and weights of certain lymphoid organs. The chicks were evenly divided to 20 groups of 20, balance in sexes. Each was randomly assigned to receive one of the following dietary treatments: basal feed with supplemented turmeric powder at 0 (NC), 50 (C50), 100 (C100) ppm or 150 (C150) ppm curcuminiods or with AGP-Chlortetracycline at 60 ppm (AGP). The basal diets for starting chicks (1-21 days of age) contained 23.33% crude protein and that for finishing chicks contain 21.50%. The chicks were freely assessed to feed and water at all time and were subjected to standard rearing procedures as applied in commercial farms. Body weight gain and feed consumption were recorded as the chicks reached 21 and 42 days of age. At 7 day of age, prior to ND and IB vaccination, blood sample was taken from eash group for HI-titer determination in serum. Blood sampling and ND, IB HI-titer determination were repeated when chicks reached 21 and 36 days of age. The trial was terminated at 42 day of age where 1 male and 1 female broiler were randomly sacrificed for carcass study. It was found that the broilers fed turmeric supplemented diets had slightly higher (P>0.05) body weight gain (BWG), feed intake (FI) and survival rates than those on the NC and AGP feeds, The broilers in the C50 diet had higher productive index or European Efficiency Factor (EEF) and more efficient feed conversion ratio (FCR) than NC (p<0.05)>C50 broilers had heavier (p<0.05)>0.05), among treatment groups; however, increasing level of curcuminiod in diet tended to increase immunity level of broilers.
