ABSTRACT

The objectives of the present research were to analyze the mathematical problem solving process and to analyze the role of problem posing on mathematical problem solving processes. The study employed qualitative research procedure emphasizing on protocol analysis and the findings are presented in the form of analytic description. The target group was consisted of
9 grade 11th students in Mahawichanugul School in Muang District, Mahasarakam Province during the first semester of the 2005 school year. The students voluntarily participated in the experiment and were organized into 3 groups of 3 students each. Each group of the students was given 3 open-ended problems to solve through thinking aloud method in the outside-of-classroom context without the researcher’s intervention. Furthermore, an audio- and video-recording was made while the students’ problem solving process was going on. The significant data which were selected for analysis included 9 protocols obtained from the open-ended problem solving session, students’ written works, and researcher’s field notes. The collected data were analyzed by means of Schoenfeld’s theoretical framework (1985) for analyzing the mathematical problem solving process and Brown & Walter’s theoretical framework (2005) for analyzing the role of problem posing on mathematical problem solving processes. The findings:1. Characteristics of problem-solving behaviors according to Schoenfeld’s framework can be categorized into 5 patterns as follows:1) The first pattern: reading-exploration-analysis-planning- implementation-verification;2) The second pattern: reading-exploration -analysis-planning- implementation;3) The third pattern: reading-analysis-planning- implementation-exploration-verification;4) The fourth pattern: reading-analysis-planning- implementation-verification-exploration;5) The fifth pattern: reading-planning- implementation-exploration-analysis-verification.2. The role of problem posing on the students’ mathematical problem solving processes were as follows:1) “Accepting the problem” type of problem posing displayed in the initial state of and during the course of problem solving. It also displayed in the transition period of episodes and in the episodes. The one appeared in the transition periods affected the change of episodes which in turn affected problem-solving behaviors that enable students to have clear goal and can choice strategy to solve the problem. “Accepting the problem” appeared in the episodes enabled students attempt to find many solutions with different strategy but still the same goal.2) “Challenging the problem” type of problem posing displayed during the course of problem solving. “Challenging the problem” generated new problem. This in turn changed the course of problem solving. Challenging the problem also enhanced students’ autonomy in determining elements or conditions of new problem which generated more strategies used to solve the problem.
