Lexical Innovation and Its Usage in Thai English

ABSTRACT

This study investigates the lexical innovation and the pattern of usage of Thai English in English newspaper published in Thailand. The data used for the analysis are taken from Bangkok Post Newspaper: 15 from Horizons section and another 15 from Outlook section. The theoretical framework of this study is from Krachu’s concept of Bilingual creativity in contact literature. The four processes of lexicon innovation used for the data analysis are: transfer of religious elements and transfer of social and cultural elements; translation, hybridization, and lexical borrowing. The study found that lexical innovation was frequently found in the articles which are written by both Thai and foreign authors. This reveals that the ‘Thainess’ in term of lexical innovation has the tendency to develop further in the future.

บทคัดย่อ

งานวิจัยนี้เป็นการศึกษาเรื่องนวัตกรรมคำศัพท์และลักษณะการใช้ของคำศัพท์นั้นจากหนังสือพิมพ์ภาษาอังกฤษที่ตีพิมพ์และจำหน่ายในประเทศไทย ข้อมูลที่นำมาศึกษาเป็นบทความที่ตีพิมพ์ลงในหนังสือพิมพ์บางกอกโพสต์ ในส่วนของ ‘Outlook’ และ ‘Horizons’ ส่วนละ 15 บทความ กรอบทฤษฎีที่นำมาใช้ในงานวิจัยชิ้นนี้มาจากแนว ความคิดของ Kachru เรื่อง Biligual Creativity in contact literature ซึ่งกระบวนการในการวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลมี 4 กระบวนการคือ transfer, translation, hybridization, และ lexical borrowing การศึกษาพบว่ามีการประดิษฐ์คำ ขึ้นมาใช้บ่อยครั้ง ในการเขียนบทความในหนังสือพิมพ์ภาษาอังกฤษ ที่เขียนโดยนักเขียนไทย และนักเขียนชาวต่างชาติ ซึ่งแสดงให้เห็นว่า “ความเป็นไทยในภาษาอังกฤษ” ซึ่งแสดงออกทางนวัตกรรมคำศัพท์นั้นมีโอกาสจะพบมากขึ้น และยังสามารถนำการศึกษานี้มาใช้กับการเรียนการสอนภาษาอังกฤษในประเทศไทยเพื่อชี้ให้ผู้เรียนและผู้สอนได้มี ทัศนคติ ที่เปิดกว้างขึ้นในด้านการใช้ภาษาอังกฤษของคนไทย
