In order to develop the learning process, participatory action research (PAR) between researchers and local peoples in a community, the Eastern Forest Organic Compost Group (OCG) network, Chachoengsao province, was initiated. A SWOT analysis was used as a tool for identifying strengths, weaknesses and for examining opportunities and threats. Then, research question relevant to the needs of OCG were identified. Finally, problem solving approaches was proposed and the collaborative research was initiated.

The research activities started with a group meeting to exchange ideas between researchers and local people on composting with cassava, followed by problem formulation and research activities on (1) effects of composting system (pellet form and dispersed form) on compost quality and (2) effect of compost usage on growth and productivity of plants. The research was carried out in the community by the OCG. These people have learned how to collect samples, record and analyze data obtained from both the field and laboratory. Research results and opinion interchange created a continuous learning process of local people in the OCG. In addition, local people have applied the knowledge gained from this PAR for improving the efficiency of composting process and the quality of compost. Regardless of initial composting materials, qualities of compost increased significantly when the static pile composting process was prolonged. Results were consisted with that from other composting material provided form either their community or neighboring areas. This research also leading to resource sharing between local people both inside and outside the communities and to an expansion of the organic compost group network.
